Indeed, why does one even go to college? A better question might be: why do teachers, for they are not professors in my case, choose to become ones? It has been noted before that preparation for academia mostly amounts to preparation for teaching, if rather poor preparation for that purpose, why can no one consider better things to do with their degrees in Art History? Perhaps the most liberal position here would conform with contemporary work centered degree inflationist etc etc, that everyone might be able to attend university, speak not of any use for their degrees? Zizek discusses beliefs which are maintained despite being held by none, perhaps this is an apt comparison to the current state wrt education: no one is quite sure why anyone should be doing it, but those who carry it out may justify it in terms of state mandates, federal funding, etc; and those who implement such laws are unsure of pedagogy, education, democracy, etc. but believe that the university should remain and simply defer to the professors.
Regardless, even if someone does have a good idea of what we're doing here these people certainly don't.
